22 Dec Christmas costs exactly AUD$44,864!
I bet a lot of us have never felt so damn broke… week before Christmas, and I bought my wife way too much. A baby on the way early 2018, and a new bathroom just finished, if it weren’t for Christmas lunch at the outlaw’s I’d be having baked beans on toast. Plus it’s the silly season, so after-work “Christmas drinks” is mandatory and worthy of factoring into the budget. Let’s face it, work and life can be stressy, so we all deserve a knees-up at this time of year to blow off some steam.
Christmas this year seems dearer than last year. Well, that’s because it is! A tool I like to re-visit each year is The PNC Christmas Price Index, a US financial institution that looks at the price of items listed in “Twelve Days Of Christmas” (six geese-a-laying, seven swans-a-swimming, etc.). This year they sent a couple out to check out the items, and it’s always an entertaining read. Take a look here.
The coast remained fairly steady across all items listed, this last 12 months. With the exception of the Five Gold Rings, which jumped 10% due to a rise in popularity. Personally, I blame this to rise in popularity to 2 Chainz and Chance The Rapper. The other notable increase was around the cost of a pear tree. For this, I do not correlate the increase to neither 2 Chainz nor Chance The Rapper. For this, I blame the unions.
On a side note… imagine having Four Calling Birds?! That would be damn expensive in it’s own right, near impossible to manage, and morally questionable. Focus your love, people.
So, enjoy your Christmas work celebrations. If like us, there has been absolutely no slump in work, which is great for business continuity and the budget at this time of year (with most of us taking a few weeks off). Thank your staff and your bosses for the year and the celebrations (and hopefully the awesome Christmas bonus/party/gift), as it’s an expensive time for businesses. And have a safe and fun break.
And my advice from a couple years ago still stands… no matter if you fell into the naughty or nice category in 2017, aim for the opposite for 2018… it’ll be fun.
