How will Marriage Equality affect your business? | Monica Clare Recruitment
One of my professional highlights, if not THE professional highlight, was having the opportunity as President of the Newcastle Business Club to interview former Prime Minister, John Winston Howard OM, AC in mid-2015 in front of over 300 local professionals. Despite never voting for the bloke, he came good on some tough deliverables during his time (gun reform, introduction of the GST). In short, I disagree with some of the guy's principles, agree with some, and he certainly is a guy accomplished and intelligent enough to be heard and considered.

How will Marriage Equality affect your business?

One of my professional highlights, if not THE professional highlight, was having the opportunity as President of the Newcastle Business Club to interview former Prime Minister, John Winston Howard OM, AC in mid-2015 in front of over 300 local professionals. Despite never voting for the bloke, he came good on some tough deliverables during his time (gun reform, introduction of the GST). In short, I disagree with some of the guy’s principles, agree with some, and he certainly is a guy accomplished and intelligent enough to be heard and considered.

During our public conversation I asked him, “Despite your personal opinion, is Australia ready for a debate on Marriage Equality?” His answer went STRAIGHT to his personal opinion (which he referenced the “Biblical definition”), which is that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. Before moving on to the next question at the conclusion of his answer, I politely but purposefully stated that I disagree with his view. There was no way I could sit up there and not give my opinion in retort, when I found his answer so out-of-touch and irrelevant/nonsensical. He made light of our disagreement on the matter, saying every day in parliament he had people disagree with him, and we moved on. I didn’t know if all parts of the senior Newcastle business community would support my view/stance, but I knew the issue is bigger than whether the CEO of “Company X” would stop giving me work because his opinion differed. Plus, I am perfectly fine to lose a client that didn’t support marriage equality, if they decided we didn’t have shared values.

So back to the question… how will Marriage Equality affect your business? Well, if you have anything to do with hospitality, accommodation, tourism, and other services associated with weddings, then I imagine there will be a healthy spike followed by a constant addition to the market size (up to $500M injection into the economy in the first year alone, according to ANZ).

Or perhaps you have members of your team who are now able to feel like equal-humans in the eyes of the law and are able to legally marry their loved one. And a feeling of acknowledgement of a civil right, equality and pure happiness has to have a positive impact on culture, doesn’t it?!

But let’s say you have no staff directly affected by Marriage Equality, and you operate in a business that has nothing to do with people getting hitched (as most of us do), then the effect it will have on your business is ZERO! Just like the effect it will have on your personal life; if you have nothing to do with anyone in the LGBTQI community, the effect will be ZERO. But it feels pretty damn good knowing we are part of a change in an outdated law by voting YES, doesn’t it!

And, if you wonder what the Bible actually has to say about it, take a look at a good break-down opinion here.

Monica Clare Recruitment proudly supports and encourages the YES vote for Marriage Equality!
